Ethiopia, “AFRICA’S BIRDER’S GARDEN of EDEN”, is a rugged ancient land which has long held a fascinating for travelers and birdwatchers alike. It is a place where Lammergeiers soar over majestic gorges, where white-robed horsemen gallop across the high plateau and where the Blue Nile plunges over dramatic cataracts at the start of its long journey to the sea. Here the Simien Fox hunts on the alpine moorland, Gelada Monkeys scramble up towering cliffs and the Mountain Nyala creeps along the forest edge. Over 800 species birds have been identified in the country including 40 which are found nowhere else – one shall make a special effort to see many of these endemic birds during his stay. One can find spectacularly abundant number of birds in Ethiopia as hunting birds is not common here. Birds in Ethiopia are extraordinarily tame as well.

Our itineraries are designed to show participants plenty of birds as well.
The most important places here in Ethiopia for birders are south Ethiopia, Addis Ababa and the Rift Valley, the Bale Highlands, Negele Borena and its environs, Awash National Parks and some parts of north and north west Ethiopia.

His-Cul Ethiopia Tour Operator provides clients with comprehensive pre-tour information on Ethiopia bird watching tours including a particularly very detailed description of day-to-day activity, clothing, climate, etc.
From Addis you fly northwards over dramatic mountain scenery to reach Lake Tana (the source of the Blue Nile) and the smoking waters of the Tississat Fall, one of the most stunning sights in Ethiopia. On the way to Lake Tana, particularly, at Debere Libanos, you will find a different landscape as you stare across the gorges with mountains stretching over a very wide area up to the foggy horizon.

Cattle Egret

Leaving the highlands behind, you drop down into the Great Rift Valley to search for the rich birdlife of Awash National Parks and the herds of game that wander through the dry thorn bush. Continuing through the rift valley you can visit its famous chain lakes, each one different in character but all teeming with water birds, before climbing up through the southeastern highlands to the Bale Mountains National Park.
